ELEPHANTS

This Elephant Mama’s Ultrasound Melts Hearts Across the Internet.

Witnessing the playful kicks and turns of an unborn child during an ultrasound is always a joy, and it’s not limited to humans alone.

The Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden recently shared a heartwarming video, proving that ultrasounds are universally delightful, regardless of the species.

Meet Asha, a 25-year-old elephant, basking in the anticipation of her 22-month pregnancy, with the joyful arrival expected in February 2022.

The zoo emphasizes that routine ultrasounds are a crucial part of their prenatal care for elephants, mirroring the practice for humans. Regular monitoring ensures a smooth progression of the pregnancy and ensures the well-being of both the mother and the calf.

Asha, accompanied by her 51-year-old mate Rex, already has two little ones—5-year-old Achara and 1-year-old Kairavi. In addition, Asha is the caring mother of another calf who resides with them at the zoo.

“Asha is exceptional; she is gentle, patient, and eager to learn,” says Rachel Emory, a spokesperson for the zoo. “She has successfully raised three calves and is an excellent mother. Asha allows her offspring to explore the zoo’s elephant habitat, and engage with other herd members, all while keeping a watchful eye on them.”

The zoo plans to closely monitor Asha’s progress over the next year to ensure everything proceeds smoothly. Anticipate more heartwarming ultrasounds in the future, and we can only hope the zoo continues to share these precious moments with the world.
